Steps to collect SMS consent[edit | edit source]

SMS marketing is a powerful channel to reach your contacts directly. However, it’s critical to collect explicit consent before sending SMS broadcasts to comply with legal and regulatory requirements. This article walks you through each action you need to take to create, manage, and grow SMS lists, use forms to collect new subscribers, and automate and maintain SMS compliance.

Creating your SMS marketing list[edit | edit source]

First, you must establish a dedicated SMS list where all opted-in contacts reside. This list becomes the foundation for all SMS outreach, ensuring only contacts with proper consent are included.

To create your SMS marketing list in your ActiveCampaign account:

  1. Click Contacts on the left menu, then click Lists.
  2. All lists in your account will appear. Click Add a list.
  3. A modal window will appear. Complete all fields provided. For the Marketing Channel field, click the dropdown and select SMS.
  4. Click the Save button.

When finished, we recommend reviewing our SMS requirements documentation for more information on compliance details. Read the Create an SMS marketing list in ActiveCampaign help article for more information.

Add contacts with existing consent[edit | edit source]

Next, you can add and import opted-in contacts to your SMS marketing list using any of the methods outlined below:

CSV Import[edit | edit source]

Prepare your CSV with required fields (phone number, consent status) and import it into your new SMS list. Read the How to import contacts from a CSV file help article for more information.

Bulk Edit & Automations[edit | edit source]

Use ActiveCampaign’s bulk edit functionality or set up automations using the Subscribes to list action to update existing contacts based on your consent criteria.

Collecting new SMS consent[edit | edit source]

The best way to grow your list and collect explicit SMS consent is through a form. This form should contain the following items:

  • Phone collection field (required)
  • Email address field (optional)
  • Clear consent checkbox with compliant opt-in language. (Remember to change your business name in the message provided)
  • Subscribe to list action

Once you create your form, you can embed it into high-traffic areas, such as your website or landing page, or use it as part of your lead generation strategy. You can also link to your SMS subscription form from an email campaign. Read the Create a form that subscribes contacts to an SMS list help article for more details.

Best Practices and Compliance[edit | edit source]

We recommend adhering to best practices and regulatory standards to build trust with your audience and protect your brand. Here are some key points to remember:

  • Clarity in Consent: Use clear language on forms and in email campaigns.
  • Opt-Out Options: Always include an easy way for contacts to opt-out in every SMS broadcast.
  • Regular List Audits: Periodically review your list to ensure all contacts have provided valid consent.
  • Double Opt-In (if needed): Consider implementing a double opt-in process for extra compliance assurance.

Outcome: You build trust with your audience and protect your brand by adhering to best practices and regulatory standards.
